In Georgia Specialist. Alexis Hutchinson, an Army cook and single mom may face criminal charges after she skipped a deployment flight to Afghanistan because, she said, no one was available to care for her infant son while she was overseas.Hutchinson says she had no choice but to refuse deployment orders because the only family she had to care for her 10-month-old son was her mother but her mother kept him for two weeks and brought him back because she says it was too much for her. Being that she was already overwhelmed by caring for three other relatives with health problems.Hutchinson's civilian attorney, Rai Sue Sussman, said Monday that one of Hutchinson's superiors told her she would have to deploy anyway and place the child in foster care. And like any parent Hutchinson refused according to her attorney, "For her it was like, 'I couldn't abandon my child,'" Sussman said. "She was really afraid of what would happen, that if she showed up they would send her to Afghanistan anyway and put her son with child protective services."
Hutchinson is in Georgia as investigators gathered facts about the case.
**What is there to gather? I know she volunteered herself to the Army but she has a child whom she joined to make a better life for. Why would she give her child over to foster care, for service? The same service that have millions of Veterans homeless on the streets, in psychiatric wards and without love ones who care to tolerate the effects of war. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE FUKING KIDDING ME. I believe she made the correct choice! So glad i got out![source]
