All White Step Team Winning The Sprite Step Off Championship has Now Come down To Racism!

No comments:
Well if most of you didnt know an all white step team, Zeta Tau Alpha won the Step off originally. However Black sorors complained to MTV and Coca Cola that the crew chosen to win, only won because the young ladies were more in line with MTV's targeted demographics (WHITE America). As well as rumors saying that the decision had already been made about the winner before the competition had even began. So (im assuming) to quiet down the noise, so they thought, Coca-Cola overturned the judge’s decision to announce that due to a "scoring discrepancy" in the sorority results, the second place winners, the Tau Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc. from Indiana University, would be recognized as co-winners and awarded the same $100,000 prize as Zeta Tau Alpha.

You know what, i actually watched footage of several of the acts and i must say that Zeta Tau Alpha were the BEST step team! White or Black, they killed the competition. Funny because half of the teams hardly did any stepping it was mostly dancing. Personally, MTV and Coca Cola should have stood by their choice because it leads people to believe maybe race was the case. Which i find hardly true! EVERYTHING ISN'T BLACK AND WHITE!! i saw with my own eyes and clear as day that Zeta Tau Alpha was one of few teams that actually stayed true to the origins of Stepping!

With that said, there is now a lot of controversy going on RACE RELATED! People white and black are upset and it has been coming down to almost fighting in areas of Atlanta. Which to me (a Black woman) I find to be plain ole STUPID. This is a case of soar losers who found a way to say something wasn't fair, to get what they want! GTFOH

So ya'll know i've done post on Janelle Monae in the past! I so adore her music, personality and her integrity! However ive done those post not really realizing that some of the world may not know of her. (I dont see how they couldn't) Janelle Monae is a Musician (the word singer alone cant describe her talent) from Kansas. I first got a ear full of Janelle my freshman year in college at Clark Atlanta University (shoutout). She did a lot of performances around campus, etc. Well Janelle is now a world wide phenom and any and everybody who loves music, loves her. Her voice reminds me of Ella Fitzgerald. Her humility, lyrical content & her ability to stay true to who she is, is speechless! SHE IS CLEARLY AHEAD OF HER TIME! Her new album titled The ArchAndroid will hit store MAY 18th!

Interracial Relationships: “Live and let Live”

1 comment:
Recently actress Amanda Bynes had a bit of controversy when she decided to take to her twitter account to make it known that she prefers “chocolate over vanilla.” As in men! Apparently, her comments caused quite the stir, with quite a few of her followers. Here is some of what she said; “It’s amazing how good it feels when someone knows how to love your body! I am having withdrawals from a certain guy lol,” she tweeted. “So turns out i prefer chocolate over vanilla. interesting.” Once twitter followers started to speak out against her preference. Amanda replied: “If any girls are mad that I like ‘chocolate’ they need to seriously get OVER it,” she again tweeted. “Sorry you can’t have all the chocolate for yourself. …So quit hating on me because I’m vanilla and I like chocolate.”

The upset kind of made me think about interracial dating. Honestly Ive never really thought about it because being from Seattle, Washington, most of the city is bi-racial. It's normal to me, it doesn't bother me and i actually appreciate it because i feel like we're coming close to world peace. (smile) Being that i don't understand peoples issue with interracial dating. I've decided that i would help someone who is in an interracial relationship cope:

1. Make sure you are mentally and emotionally stable enough to deal with what will come. Most of the world, does not approve. Which means they will do everything in their power to break your spirits. People will be people and don't hold them to any higher standard than that.

2. Surround yourself with people who tolerate diversity. A lot of people say they are okay when it comes to dealing with people of other cultures and skin colors. Most are. However 9 out of 10 times that doesn't include interracial relationships. Make sure you surround yourself with people who have a tolerance for unconditional LOVE. It will make you feel more comfortable about your decision and with your mate.

3. Avoid the media, at all costs. We all watch TV and enjoy doing so, just make sure you focus on your love for the person your with. Don't get caught up in the media because much it is heightened stereotypes. It can and it will start confusion.

4. Prepare for some family members and even friends, to not be comfortable with your relationships. They say 'opinions are like a**holes, every body's got one'. Make that is your motto. Don't expect or assume that the people you love the most will be accepting of your new found love. Prepare for several 'joking' racial slurs and strong opinions. However, in order to deal with these issues talk to your mate before hand about their feelings. It will help make the confrontations easier to deal with.

5. The people that don't know you, don't matter. People will stare its natural, get over it! But don't stress yourself trying to figure out what other people think of you. Whether or not you've sold out to your race or what ever else people can come up with. Focus on your happiness. Worrying about the stares is pointless!

6.Make sure that you keep a open dialogue about anything that could help your relationship sustain in the midst of other peoples ignorance. Even if its a slick comment someone made at work. Express it to your mate and communicate. Just in case, your mate is ever in a similar situation he/she has already processed the thought, you guys have discussed it and worked out how to handle it.

(Keep in mind, these are just my common sense rules.. I say “Live and let Live.”)

Black History month Spotlight: George Washington Carver

No comments:
George Washington Carver (January 1864– January 5, 1943), was an American scientist, botanist, educator and inventor. The day and year of his birth are unknown; he is believed to have been born before slavery was abolished in Missouri in January 1864.Much of Carver's fame is based on his research into and promotion of alternative crops to cotton, such as peanuts and sweet potatoes. He wanted poor farmers to grow alternative crops both as a source of their own food and as a source of other products to improve their quality of life. The most popular of his 44 practical bulletins for farmers contained 105 food recipes that used peanuts. He also created or disseminated about 100 products made from peanuts that were useful for the house and farm, including cosmetics, dyes, paints, plastics, gasoline, and nitroglycerin. In the Reconstruction South, an agricultural monoculture of cotton depleted the soil, and in the early 20th century the boll weevil destroyed much of the cotton crop. Carver's work on peanuts was intended to provide an alternative crop.In addition to his work on agricultural extension education for purposes of advocacy of sustainable agriculture and appreciation of plants and nature, Carver's important accomplishments also included improvement of racial relations, mentoring children, poetry, painting, and religion. He served as an example of the importance of hard work, a positive attitude, and a good education. His humility, humanitarianism, good nature, frugality, and rejection of economic materialism also have been admired widely.
One of his most important roles was in undermining, through the fame of his achievements and many talents, the widespread stereotype of the time that the black race was intellectually inferior to the white race. In 1941, Time magazine dubbed him a "Black Leonardo", a reference to the Renaissance Italian polymath Leonardo da Vinci. To commemorate his life and inventions, George Washington Carver Recognition Day is celebrated on January 5, the anniversary of Carver's death.

Martin Luther King, Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American clergyman, activist and prominent leader in the African-American civil rights movement. His main legacy was to secure progress on civil rights in the United States, and he has become a human rights icon: King is recognized as a martyr by two Christian churches.[A Baptist minister, King became a civil rights activist early in his career. He led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957, serving as its first president. King's efforts led to the 1963 March on Washington, where King delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech. There, he raised public consciousness of the civil rights movement and established himself as one of the greatest orators in U.S. history. In 1964, King became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end racial segregation and racial discrimination through civil disobedience and other non-violent means. By the time of his death in 1968, he had refocused his efforts on ending poverty and opposing the Vietnam War, both from a religious perspective. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977 and Congressional Gold Medal in 2004; Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was established as a U.S. national holiday in 1986.

Malcolm X (born Malcolm Little; May 19, 1925 – February 21, 1965), was an African-American Muslim minister, public speaker, and human rights activist. To his admirers, he was a courageous advocate for the rights of African Americans, a man who indicted white America in the harshest terms for its crimes against black Americans. His detractors accused him of preaching racism, black supremacy, antisemitism, and violence. But that was not the case! He has been described as one of the greatest and most influential African Americans in history

CLASSIC ALBUM REWIND: Michael Jackson "Off The Wall"

1 comment:
I already know that someone wants to know..Why didn't i pick Thriller instead? Well honestly , because though Thriller was a HUGE success and darn near every song was a single. Off the Wall was the album that lead into what Thriller was about to conquer. Besides Off the Wall got more play from me than any other Jackson album ever, next to Thriller of course. Off The Wall also won Jackson his first Grammy and Jackson allowed him to become the first solo artist to have four singles from the same album peak inside the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100! If that was not enough, Off the Wall was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. This album has one of my favorite Michael songs ever "Burn This Disco Out"

Artist Spotlight: Matt Morris

No comments:
A good friend of mine (Teia B) told me to check out Matt Morris and i must say i love the tone of his voice. I actually spent another hour listening to several live performances and i love his lyrics and his embrace of personal experiences, politics, romance and spirituality. GUESS WHAT!? Morris used to be a Mouseketeers! So of course he's worked with a few of his mates. Morris and Christina Aguilera co-wrote five songs on her Stripped album, including the hit “Can’t Hold Us Down”; they also wrote Kelly Clarkson’s hit, “Miss Independent.” Morris teamed up with Timberlake to craft “The Only Promise That Remains” – a duet performed by Timberlake and Reba McEntire for the Reba Duets album. The pair also wrote “(Another Song) All Over Again” produced by mega-producer Rick Rubin, for Justin’s 2008 FutureSex/LoveSounds. Most importantly Matt has his own album titled " When Everything Breaks Open" Not to mention he just appeared on the George Lopez show and will appear on Ellen as well.

Amidst his deejay sets, Coit wrote rhymes as well, eventually leading to him being in a group and opening for national acts including The Clipse, Wale, and Talib Kweli. Artist Spotlight: Jaspects

No comments:
Jaspects is a group of friends all formally trained in jazz at Morehouse College. Jaspects works to rescue the struggling concept of musicianship while breaking down the structural constraints of hip-hop. Individually, Jaspects’ works have appeared in the 2005 major motion picture “Hustle & Flow,” on Chamillionaire’s platinum albums “Chamillitary” and “Sound of Revenge,” on Carlos Santana’s “All That I Am,” with platinum recording artists David Banner, Wyclef Jean, Big Boi (“Kryptonite”), Mary J. Blige (“Just Fine”) and newcomers Janelle Monae, Algebra, PJ Morton, and Fonzworth Bentley. Collectively, Jaspects has performed on bills with Herbie Hancock, Eric Roberson, Patti LaBelle, George Clinton, Stevie Wonder, Brian McKnight, Regina Bell, Yolanda Adams, Dwele, Bilal, Mike Phillips, the late Gerald Levert and blues legend Francine Reed. After playing for jazz lover Bill Cosby, the band was selected to perform during the Ray Charles Tribute held in Beverly Hills, California, where Samuel L. Jackson and Quincy Jones attended. Jaspects is a two-time Atlanta Jazz Festival “Future of Jazz” winner (2005 & 2006) and was awarded the critic's pick for “Best Atlanta Jazz Band” for 2007 & 2008 by Atlanta weekly magazine Creative Loafing. CLASSIC ALBUM REWIND: Minnie Riperton "Perfect Angel"

No comments:
Minnie Riperton's Perfect Angel album is by far one of my favorite albums ever! From any artist. Perfect Angel is Minnie's second release by Epic Records in 1974. According to the charts the album's biggest hit was, "Lovin' You", which topped the U.S. Pop Singles chart for one week in early April 1975. However, "Lovin You" was my least favorite of all the tracks on the album. The album went gold on the strength of "Lovin' You" and remains the only gold album in Riperton's career.
